ETITINWO24:MTN clarifies accounting provision for fine



The Management of MTN Nigeria has clarifed that the R9287 million set aside in the recently released MTN Group Financial results is in accordance with the Principle of Prudence in generally accepted accounting standards.

This requires that reasonable provisions be made for contingent liabilities.

Discussions with the Nigerian authorities are still ongoing and stakeholders will be advised accordingly when a settlement is reached.

MTN Executive, Amina Oyagbola, speaking to the same point made by the Executive Chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko in the 2015 results announcement published earlier said, “MTN’s auditors have required that the company make a provision in line with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).”

ETITINWO24:Arsenal title hopes hit as Cech faces lengthy absence



Arsenal’s hopes of capturing their first Premier League title in 12 years took a huge hit on Friday with news that goalkeeper Petr Cech faces up to a month out injured.

The Czech Republic international suffered a muscular problem at the end of Wednesday’s 2-1 loss at Swansea City.

That reverse left the Gunners six points below Premier League leaders Leicester City in third place, ahead of Saturday’s trip to second-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Cech’s absence confirmed by manager Arsene Wenger at a press conference on Friday thrusts Colombian World Cup goalkeeper David Ospina into the spotlight.

Former Chelsea star Cech injured his calf as he raced back towards his own penalty area after coming up for a corner against Swansea.

In continuation of their offensive clearance operations of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in the North East, troops of 81 Battalion and 251 Task Force Battalion of 25 Task Force Brigade, 7 Division Nigerian Army, demystified Boko Haram terrorists spiritual power base at the Alagarno forest, Borno State.

Garrison, conducted fighting patrol in which they cleared Boko Haram terrorist’s hideout at Lawin Meleri, Matiri Bulaka and Aljeri villages.

During the operation, they killed 5 Boko Haram terrorists and also rescued 63 persons held captives by the terrorists.

The troops recovered 1 Dane gun and 1 Light Machine Gun Bipod Stand and detonated 1 Improvised Explosive Device enroute.

A statement by Col Sani SUsman on the Alagarno operation said, from Army headquarters said “The troops based on tip off, conducted a clearance operation around Alagarno forest general area, destroying terrorists camps at Mosa, Ariwuzumari and Kagalmari, as well as Missene, Joba, Yajiwa and Sansan.

“During the operations, the troops were able to clear all the camps, killing quite a number of terrorists and recovered Boko Haram terrorists flags hoisted on some premises, destroyed their logistics base and recovered 31 motorcycles, assorted foodstuffs, a donkey and a pick up van, AK-45 rifle with registration number 17714 and a Dane gun.

“Other items recovered include 2 boxes of 7.62mm ammunition, 4 loaded magazines of AK-47 rifles and 2 magazines pack.”

Coach Samson Siasia has invited 22 home –based professionals and 20 overseas –based players for Nigeria’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against the Pharaohs of Egypt this month.

Siasia, who was named last week as Super Eagles’ Caretaker Coach, passionately appealed to all Nigerians, including the sporting media, to rally round the team and show belief as the Eagles host the Egyptians in Kaduna on Friday, March 25 and play away in Alexandria on Tuesday, March 29.

The 22 home –boys are expected to hit camp at the Bolton White Apartments, Abuja on Sunday, March 6 before the overseas –based boys arrive as from Sunday, March 20.

“I want to passionately appeal to Nigerians, everybody, to show belief in the team and give us total support. It will not be easy, but if we stick together and present a united force to fight this battle, I believe we will triumph.

“I have absolute faith in the players. Nigeria is blessed with so many talented footballers across the world and I know that those we are inviting for this match will give everything for the six points in both matches. Personally, I will give everything that I have to offer for us to win both matches.”

The former Nigeria captain, who was in the same position between December 2010 and October 2011, assured that only the best players who “showed ability to run and decimate the opposition” will be given opportunity in both matches.

Regulars Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Olufemi Thomas, Kalu Orji Okogbue, Austin Oboroakpo, Chima Akas, Ezekiel Bassey and Chisom Chikatara are in the home based mix, while Carl Ikeme, Efe Ambrose, Elderson Echiejile, Godfrey Oboabona, Kenneth Omeruo, John Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi, Ahmed Musa, Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo, Moses Simon and Fanendo Adi are among the overseas –based legion.
